Leading the way in access to energy in rural areas

Schneider Electric unveils Villasol; implements pilot project in Ogun state

Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, on September 29, 2011, unveiled its latest renewable energy solution, Villasol, which is aimed at addressing the electricity need of nigerians especially people living in the rural areas who have no access to electricity. The highlight of the launch was the commissioning of the Villasol pilot project which Schneider Electric donated to Asore, a rural community in Ogun State in association with the state’s ministry of special duties

The commissioning of the Villasol power project in Asore attracted top dignitaries including the deputy governor of Ogun state, Prince Segun Adesegun, Prof Abubakar Sambo, director general of Energy Commission of Nigeria,  several commissioners and representatives of ogun state government, officials from Schneider Electric’s global operations, directors, corporate executives and CSR leaders, among other guests.

Villasol, is a solar-powered micro off-grid facility for decentralised rural electrification. The facility has the capacity to supply domestic, entrepreneurial and community activities for up to 100 households without connection to the national grid.

Speaking at the launch and project commissioning, the Country President of Schneider Electric Nigeria, Mr. Marcel Hochet, said Villasol is part of the company’s innovative approach towards addressing the  huge energy deficit of Nigerians and other people in less developed countries of the world.

According to Mr. Hochet, ‘Schneider Electric is waging war on darkness with the power of the sun. Villasol brings with it, the hope and possibility that rural communities can now have access to electricity without depending on the national grid. The product will help drive improvement in the living conditions of people at the base of the pyramid who do not have access to electricity in Nigeria and the rest of the world’.

A standard Villasol application can produce up to 4KW of power to support community services such as schools, health centres, water supply and collective lighting. It consists of a Schneider Electric Villasol panel, photovoltaic panels, a battery bank and battery charging stations that enable a communal recharge system.

For entrepreneurial activities, Villasol can provide electricity for light industrial activities in the rural areas which includes mills, handcraft, soldering, irrigation, mobile phone recharge as well as for domestic appliances like radio and television.

The performance of Villasol is enhanced with the integration of In-Diya, Schneider Electric’s LED based home lighting solution which will be launched soon.
